How do I clean out my pond?Over time your pond will gather a layer of dirt on the bottom. This can be a mixture of soil, fish waste, decaying leaves and algae. There are several different ways to clean this layer of sludge from the bottom of the pond:
Pond netsThere are a variety of nets you can use to remove silt and algae from your pond. Nets can also be used to take out floating leaves and debris before they can rot down and add to the sludge layer. Click here to see Bradshaws' range of pond nets.
Pond additivesThere are a number of pond additives available which will break down the sludge layer. Just work out your pond volume and add the correct dose. Click here to see Bradshaws' range of sludge treatments.
Pond VacuumsPond vacuums work in a similar way to your household vacuum cleaner in that they suck up the dirt and algae. This is then deposited down a drain or onto your flower beds. Vacuums are the easiest (and least messy) way to clean out your pond. Bradshaws have three types of pond vacuum available: in-pond, pond-side and hose powered.
Draining your pond and digging out sludgeSome people like to completely empty their pond and clean it out by hand. This is a lot of work and you will need to make sure that any fish are kept in something suitable and that your pump and filter are kept running to support the fish and keep friendly bacteria alive.
