When Should I Turn My Pump And Filter Off?

Pump and filter systems have to run 24 hours a day to be effective. Turning a pump and filter on in the day and off at night is almost worse than not having one at all.

During The Winter

In the winter when fish are not feeding and there is less sunshine you can clean out your pond and prepare it for the spring. You should clean your pump thoroughly and check for any build up of limescale. When you clean your filter box make sure that there is no water in the UVC (Ultra Violet Clarifier) as this can freeze and damage the unit.

In the winter move your pump up onto a marginal shelf instead of leaving it in the bottom of the pond. This will help to ensure that a layer of water at the bottom of the pond stays relatively undisturbed and warmer than the rest, essential if you keep fish.
