Blagdon UVC Introduction The relatively new-to-the-market Blagdon UVC has been tested for a long while before being brought to you, Blagdon have put effort into testing all aspects to get this UVC right so it will last. This UVCis made from a high quality plastic, which means that if you want to leave it running through the winter it will stand up to the elements. Blagdons Unique Linking System Blagdon have entered the market with the bigger garden ponds in mind, or koi ponds. Any number of Blagdon units can be joined together easily and quickly by using a Blagdon Pro UVC. Everyone can now have a UVC big enough for their pond. All the Fittings The Blagdon UVC is the only UVC that we sell that comes with either, standard fittings that will connect to flexible hose and a link for selvent weld pipe. The flexible hose size ranges are 20mm, 25mm, 32mm and 40mm meaning the UVC will slot straight into any existing system without any problems. The Blagdon UVC is also supplied with wide bore solvent weld link which is 43mm, this is for using with rigid piping, to seal the pipe you will need to use a solvent weld adhesive and fittings. More Efficient UV Bulb Using the new more efficient single ended bulbs mean that not only are you using less power, but you are gaining 30% more efficiency also. They will also run to their maximum output for a full 9000 hours, so change your bulb every spring and you will always be fighting off the threat of green water. All this means that the UVC unit is good for the planet and good for your wallet. Safer! The Blagdon UVC has an outdoor transformer, so in the unlikely event there is a leak it makes the whole system safer. The transformer lowers the voltage of the electricity passing through the Blagdon unit, meaning that if the unit did fail it wouldn't cause a massive amount of distress to pond life. Glowing End Cap The end cap where the Blagdon UV bulb is fitted has an easy to use screw function, this allows for very quick changing of the UV bulb. Also on the same end cap there is a translucent ring, when the unit is working you will be able to see a blue glow from the UV bulb, this is easier at night time. If you are experiencing green water in your pond, it will normally be because the UV bulb isn't working. Performance Below is Blagdon's performance guide, it gives you an idea of what size UVC you should be using on your pond. If you have any questions or are in doubt please just give one of our advisors a call who will be more than happy to help you select the correct UVC for your pond.
Easy To Open End Cap To replace the UV bulb within a Blagdon UVC is really easy, as explained before there is an easy to open screw end that allows for a very quick change of UV bulb, shown in the above left picture. To open up the Blagdon UVC turn the end cap anti-clockwise, this will be really easy and you will not feel a highresistance. When purchasing the Blagdon unit as new from us, the bulb is not installed you will need to install the bulb yourself. Most manufactuers will not install the bulb in the UVC's at first so that a) You can get use to the process of changing the bulb and B) that it would be unsafe in shipping for the bulb to be installed as it would rattle around, maybe causing the bulbto break.
Installing the UVC Bulb Once you have opened up the end cap on the Blagdon you will be see the UV bulb socket, as shown above in the top left picture of the three, this is the electrical feed to your UVC bulb. As you will notice the bulbs that Blagdon use are 4 pin UV bulbs, you must always use the correct bulb, any others will not fit and will be harmful to the unit. If in doubt which bulb to use, please just give us a call and we can help get the correct size bulb for you. When installing the UVC bulb into the Blagdon unit remember never to directly handle the UV bulb, as any grease that is passed onto the bulb if left uncleaned, will burn onto the surface of the bulb and greatly effect the performance of your UVC. Either use the cardboard sleeve that the bulb comes in, or use a soft cloth, this will prevent any grease being passed onto the bulb. When slotting the bulb into place, the bulb socket has almost like two clips on the side of it so don't worry if it takes a little amount of force and a couple of goes to slot the bulb into place. It's better to have it fit snuggly like that than potentially having it damaged by wobbling about. Once the bulb is securely in place, gently insert the bulb back inside the unit and then tighten the end cap up all the way, make sure the end cap is tight to prevent any chance of the Blagdon UVC leaking!
Changing or Cleaning The Quartz Sleeve At the start of each season when you are changing the UV bulb it is always worth checking the quartz sleeve that protects your UVC's electrics. This protective sleeve is made from quartz rather than glass, quartz will allow UV rays to pass through it where as glass will not, this is why you can't get sunburnt through glass! Some older and cheaper UVC's did use glass and they were nowhere near as efficient at flocculating (clumping together) the algae. As the quartz sleeve is in direct contact with your pond water, it is inevitable that it will get a layer of sludge and algae building up on it, so every time you change the bulb give the quartz a good clean with a damp cloth, remember though quartz is a delicate material so be careful. If you notice that your bulb is working and has been changed recently, 9 times out of 10 times it will be because the quartz sleeve is dirty and needs a clean.
