Water Movement

Keep it Natural with a Nature Pond

Once you have built your pond and filled it with water, we can get to the interesting part - making the water move and keeping it clean.

Large Nature Pond

A nature pond is the simplest option, as you basically do nothing. For some people just having a still, natural pond in their garden is the aim. If you decide on this option then your pond will go green for a while; this is completely normal. After a period of time (around 2 years) and provided you have enough plants and either no fish, or very few, this should sort itself out.

If you do choose to have fish in a pond of this type wait until the pond is well established (6 months or more), add very few native fish (such as sticklebacks) and don’t feed them. Their growth and numbers will then match the available resources of the pond.

If you would rather have a pond with a bit more movement to it then you have two main choices for what to add next: a waterfall or a fountain.
