How often should I replace my filter media?

Filter media replacement depends on your pond's biological load and water conditions. Most filter foams and mechanical media need changing every 4-8 weeks during the active season. Biological media lasts longer, typically 6-12 months, as beneficial bacteria colonies take time to establish. Monitor water clarity and filter flow rate; if either deteriorates noticeably, it's time for a change. Regular maintenance prevents algae from blooming and keeps fish healthy.

What's the difference between mechanical and biological filter media?

Mechanical media physically traps debris, dead leaves, and waste particles, keeping water clear. Biological media provides a surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise, breaking down harmful ammonia and nitrites into safer compounds. Most effective pond systems use both, with mechanical media catching visible waste first, then water passes through biological media for chemical filtration. You'll typically need to replace mechanical media more often than you would with biological media.

What causes filter media to clog quickly?

Rapid clogging is usually a sign that there is a lot of organic matter getting into the filter, which may come from a number of sources (such as fish being overfed or the accumulation of debris) Algae may also be a factor, as might inadequate pre-filtration that subsequently allows large particles to reach the main filter media. If you check your pond and see leaves, uneaten food, dead plants or anything else that may clog the filter, improving skimming will help substantially with skimming and extend the life of your consumables.

Do I need to replace all filter media at once?

We’d generally recommend against this, as biological filter media will lose a lot of effectiveness if it is replaced all at the same time - if it is replaced in stages, this will ensure that some mature bacteria remain to seed the new media. Mechanical filter media can be replaced at the same time, however. Only replace everything simultaneously if treating a serious disease or complete system failure when you're disinfecting the entire filter.

Can UV clarifiers replace filter media?

UV clarifiers are designed to deal with free-floating algae and parasites, but do not remove organic waste or provide biological filtration. UV systems work best when they’re used alongside filter media, so we’d recommend using both in combination for the best results. Using UV alone will result in poor water quality and fish stress despite crystal-clear appearance.
