What causes green pond water?

Green pond water is primarily caused by microscopic algae multiplying rapidly, due to an excess of nutrients in the water. These nutrients often come from fish waste, decaying organic matter, or excessive fertiliser runoff. Warm temperatures and abundant sunlight can lead to even more algae growth, creating a perfect environment for a green, cloudy appearance that can quickly overwhelm a pond's ecosystem.

Is green pond water bad for fish?

Green pond water can be detrimental to fish health, as excessive algae growth depletes oxygen levels and creates an unstable aquatic environment. While some algae are normal and even beneficial, an overwhelming bloom can block sunlight, prevent proper photosynthesis for aquatic plants, and also creates conditions that stress fish. In severe cases, the algae can cause significant oxygen depletion, potentially leading to fish suffocation.
